Scott Lurie remembers the day he bought Pabst Brewing Co.’s former warehouse and distribution center, which covers an entire block in downtown Milwaukee’s northwest corner.
“I walked in here, and the roof was leaking. There was no power. And I thought, ‘What the hell…'” Lurie said.
“But, like with anything else, you need to be optimistic,” he said.
It helped that Lurie held a commitment from Milwaukee Brewing Co. to lease much of the building for a new craft brewery. Also, another large piece would soon be sold to create a self-storage center.
But those spaces still needed extensive renovations. And, Lurie wanted to fulfill his vision of developing office space — which would require adding a whole new floor, lots of windows and updated electrical, plumbing and heating systems.
Two years later, Milwaukee Brewing Co., 1128 N. 9th St., staged its grand opening in September, and an adjacent restaurant, Glass + Griddle, opened in late August. Extra Space Storage is doing a brisk business in the building’s lower level, at 1131 N. 8th St.
And Lurie is starting to move in office tenants, with other office prospects touring the property, now known as The 42 (a reference to its old designation under Pabst as building No. 42).
“I’ve always had a vision for creative office space,” Lurie said. “Now that the vision is here, people are starting to show up more often.” Read more on JSOnline.
